Tesla said on October 2, 2026 that it delivered 486,532 vehicles in the third quarter. That was 2.1% fewer than in the same quarter of 2025 but about 5% more than analysts had forecast. The company built 464,391 vehicles from July through September, according to the production and deliveries report it filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. The report says Tesla deployed 13.7 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of energy storage products.

Because Tesla sells directly to customers, deliveries serve as a proxy for its sales, as The Verge put it. This was the second quarter in a row above 480,000 deliveries, after a first quarter of 358,023. It leaves Tesla ahead of its 2025 pace with three months of the year to go.

How many vehicles did Tesla deliver in Q3 2026?

  • Deliveries: 486,532. That is down from 497,099 in the third quarter of 2025 and up 1.3% from 480,126 in the second quarter of 2026.
  • Production: 464,391, up 3.8% from 447,450 a year earlier.
  • Model 3 and Model Y: 478,237 delivered, against 481,166 a year earlier.
  • Other models: 8,295 delivered, against 15,933 a year earlier.
  • Energy storage: 13.7 GWh deployed, against 12.5 GWh a year earlier. A gigawatt-hour is a million kilowatt-hours of battery capacity.

Tesla delivered 22,141 more vehicles than it built in the quarter. The reverse was true at the start of the year. In the first quarter it built 408,386 vehicles and delivered 358,023. Over the first nine months of 2026 the two totals nearly match, at 1,324,535 built and 1,324,681 delivered.

Did Tesla beat Wall Street estimates?

On vehicles, yes. On September 29, 2026, Tesla published a consensus it compiled from 24 sell-side analysts. Sell-side analysts work for banks and brokerages. The consensus was 461,974 deliveries, so the result came in 24,558 higher. TechCrunch reported that the figure topped even the most optimistic Wall Street view. Tesla says it does not endorse the analysts' estimates.

On energy storage, no. The consensus of the 19 analysts who gave a storage forecast was 15.9 GWh. The 13.7 GWh that Tesla reported was slightly above the second quarter's 13.5 GWh. It was below the record of 14.2 GWh set in the fourth quarter of 2025.

Why are Tesla deliveries down from a year ago?

The comparison is with Tesla's best quarter. The company described its third-quarter 2025 result as a record for both deliveries and deployments. According to the Internal Revenue Service, buyers of new electric vehicles in the United States could get a federal tax credit of up to $7,500. It says the credit stopped applying to vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025. The Verge and TechCrunch both reported that buyers rushed to use the credit before it expired.

The lineup also shrank. Chief executive Elon Musk said in January 2026 that Tesla would end production of the Model S sedan and Model X SUV, TechCrunch reported at the time. The Verge reported on October 2, 2026 that the company discontinued both earlier in the year. TechCrunch noted that Tesla had counted those two cars and the Cybertruck pickup together as "other models" in its quarterly figures. That category accounts for 7,638 of the 10,567-vehicle drop from a year earlier. Model 3 and Model Y deliveries fell by 2,929, or 0.6%.

The October 2 release also carries a sentence that the second-quarter release did not. It says production and delivery numbers "represent passenger vehicles sold to customers." It does not say which vehicles that leaves out. Tesla has launched the production version of its Semi electric truck, according to TechCrunch. It has also put its Cybercab, a two-seat vehicle with no steering wheel or pedals, on the roads of Austin, Texas, TechCrunch reported.

The Model 3 and Model Y made up 478,237 of the 486,532 vehicles Tesla delivered in the third quarter of 2026.

Where is Tesla growing?

Tesla's report has no regional breakdown. The picture comes from outside data that does not yet cover the whole quarter.

In Europe, Tesla registrations rose 43.3% to 191,787 in the first eight months of 2026. That is according to figures the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association published on September 24, 2026. The figures cover the European Union, the European Free Trade Association countries and the United Kingdom. Registrations of all battery-electric cars in those markets rose 38.8% over the same period.

In the United States, the first half of the year went the other way. Cox Automotive's Kelley Blue Book estimated Tesla's U.S. sales at 242,100 for January through June 2026. It estimated that was down 10.9% from a year earlier, in an electric vehicle market that shrank 23.8%. Tesla still accounted for 52.3% of U.S. electric vehicle sales in that period.

TechCrunch also reported continued strong sales from Tesla's factory in China, some of them driven by newer markets such as Japan and Australia.

How does Tesla compare with BYD?

BYD, the Chinese carmaker, sold more battery-electric cars. Its sales report for September was filed with the Hong Kong stock exchange on October 1, 2026. It shows 1,629,957 battery-electric passenger vehicles sold in the first nine months of the year. That compares with 1,324,681 Tesla deliveries. Subtracting the half-year total in BYD's June report leaves 762,478 for the third quarter. That is about 276,000 more than Tesla delivered.

Counting plug-in hybrids and commercial vehicles as well, BYD sold 3,131,576 vehicles in the nine months. That is 3.9% fewer than a year earlier.

The two companies do not count the same way. BYD reports monthly sales volumes and labels them unaudited, while Tesla reports quarterly deliveries.

What happens next?

Tesla says it will post its third-quarter financial results after the market closes on Wednesday, October 21, 2026. It says it will hold a webcast that day at 5:30 p.m. Eastern time. The company cautions that deliveries are only one measure of its performance. It says financial results also depend on average selling price, cost of sales and exchange rates.

The full-year picture depends on the fourth quarter. Tesla delivered 1,636,129 vehicles in 2025, down from 1,789,226 in 2024. Its nine-month total for 2026 is 8.8% higher than at the same point in 2025. It needs 311,448 deliveries in the last three months to match last year. It delivered 418,227 in the fourth quarter of 2025. The analyst consensus compiled before this report put 2026 deliveries at 1,767,255.

The delivery report does not say how many vehicles went to each region or what they sold for.
