Why Are RAM Prices So High? The AI Memory Crunch Explained
RAM costs more because memory makers are steering limited factory capacity toward AI data centers, and new plants take years to build. Samsung and Micron say supply will stay tight through 2028.

RAM prices are high, market researchers say, because the largest memory makers are sending their limited factory output to AI data centers. Demand and margins are strongest there, they say, and that leaves less memory for PCs, phones and other devices. New factories take years to build, so supply cannot catch up quickly. As of October 2026, executives at two of the three biggest suppliers, Samsung and Micron, have said they expect tight supply to last through 2028.
How much have RAM prices gone up?
TrendForce, a market research firm, reported in August 2026 on contract prices for server DRAM, the memory that cloud companies buy. It said those prices rose a cumulative 64 percent in the second half of 2025. It forecast a further jump of about 270 percent during 2026. DRAM is the type of memory chip used as RAM. Contract prices are the rates that large buyers such as PC makers and cloud providers negotiate with memory makers.
World Semiconductor Trade Statistics said global memory chip sales in the first half of 2026 were 305 percent higher than a year earlier.
Consumers see the increases in the price of finished devices. The Register reported figures from the analyst firm Context in June 2026. They covered the first six weeks of the second quarter in European distribution. Average notebook prices were up 11.4 percent year over year, the report said, and desktop prices 10.5 percent.
TrendForce expects the climb to slow but not stop. In a forecast published September 30, 2026, it projected a rise in conventional DRAM contract prices. It put the rise at 10 to 15 percent in the fourth quarter compared with the third.
Why is AI causing a memory shortage?
AI servers need large amounts of high-bandwidth memory (HBM), plus high-capacity server memory. HBM is a stacked form of DRAM that sits beside AI processors. Both kinds of memory draw on the same limited cleanroom space and silicon wafers as ordinary PC and phone memory.
IDC described this in December 2025 as a zero-sum game. Wafers that go into the stacked memory for AI processors cannot also supply mid-range smartphones or consumer laptops, it said. The research firm said demand from large cloud companies had pushed the three biggest memory manufacturers to shift capacity and investment toward higher-margin data center products. Those three are Samsung, SK hynix and Micron. IDC expected DRAM supply to grow 16 percent in 2026, which it called below historical norms.
TrendForce estimates that HBM and server memory modules together will account for 51 percent of DRAM supply in 2026, measured in bits.
One supplier decided to close its consumer business. Micron announced in December 2025 that it would exit its Crucial consumer business. It said shipments to consumer channels would continue only until February 2026. The company said the decision would improve supply for larger customers in faster-growing segments.
Who is paying, and who is profiting?
Memory makers are reporting record results:
- SK hynix posted second-quarter 2026 revenue of 79.3 trillion won and an operating margin of 76 percent.
- Samsung reported a record operating profit of 89.5 trillion won for the same quarter. Its chip division earned 89.2 trillion won, it said.
- Micron reported revenue of $54.23 billion for the quarter that ended September 3, 2026. That was up from $11.32 billion a year earlier, it said.
Device makers are on the other side of those numbers. Samsung's own smartphone and network businesses reported an operating loss of 0.7 trillion won in the same quarter. The company cited elevated component costs across the industry. IDC said in December 2025 that memory can represent 15 to 20 percent of the parts cost of a mid-range phone. TrendForce said in September 2026 that PC brands were reducing solid-state drive capacities in mainstream models to hold costs down.

When will RAM prices come down?
Neither Samsung nor Micron is offering a date. The Register reported on Samsung's July 2026 earnings call. According to the report, memory executive Jaejune Kim made these points on the call:
- It takes more than three years to go from starting construction of a factory to producing wafers.
- A significant increase in supply was unlikely through 2028.
- Constraints would be more severe in 2027 than in 2026.
Micron chief executive Sanjay Mehrotra spoke on the company's fiscal 2026 earnings call. He said he expected demand to exceed supply in 2027 and 2028, according to The Register. The same report said Micron plans to start up new factories in 2028.
These statements come from companies that benefit from high prices, and forecasts have shifted quickly. WSTS said that swapping its second-quarter estimate for actual results put 2026 memory market growth at 302 percent. That is 53 percentage points above its spring forecast, WSTS said.
There are moderating signs. TrendForce reported in July 2026 that several US cloud providers had signed multi-year supply agreements that restrict price increases. SK hynix said in July 2026 that it had finalized long-term agreements with around 10 customers.
The bottom line
RAM is expensive because AI infrastructure is absorbing a growing share of a memory supply that cannot expand quickly. TrendForce's forecast for late 2026 shows price growth slowing rather than reversing. Samsung and Micron do not expect supply to catch up with demand through 2028.
